We serve these cinnamon sugar bread french toast sticks with a powdered sugar and orange glaze for dunking, which makes them taste like the gooey inside of a cinnamon roll. They're fun, delicious, and (best of all) quick and easy.
A few weeks ago I was perusing the bread shelves at Trader Joe's when I accidentally came across the hand-twisted cinnamon sugar bread. It looked delicious, and I immediately decided it needed to be turned into French toast. The result is these french toast sticks, and oh my gosh--they're so good. If you don't have a Trader Joe's near you, don't sweat it. This recipe works with any cinnamon bread.

Where to find cinnamon bread
You can find the bread we use at Trader Joe's in the regular bread section. It's filled with cinnamon sugar and has hints of little crusty bits where the cinnamon sugar has caramelized. It's SO GOOD you'll think it's from a specialty bakery.
If you don't have a Trader Joe's near you, look for cinnamon bread at your local grocery store. Costco has Butter Cinnamon Sugar Loaves during certain times of the year that would be great for this recipe (and, like all things at Costco, they come in a multi-pack so you could make A LOT of french toast sticks). If all else fails, Walmart sells Pepperidge Farm Brown Sugar Cinnamon Swirl Breakfast Bread, which would also work just fine.
Variations
- Serve as normal french toast instead of sticks
- Dunk in maple syrup or pancake syrup instead of the powdered sugar glaze
- Serve with fresh berries
- Use cinnamon raisin bread instead of regular cinnamon bread
Frequently asked questions
The cinnamon bread really makes this recipe because it's so reminiscent of a cinnamon roll. That said, this recipe would also be great with cinnamon raisin bread or (if you want to get rid of the cinnamon altogether) thick slices of brioche.
Yes! Try reheating them in the oven at 400°F for 5-10 minutes or until warm. You could also reheat them in an air fryer at 400°F for about 5 minutes.
Nope! Just skip the part where you cut the bread and serve this as normal french toast. You can drizzle the powdered sugar glaze over the top of the toast in place of maple syrup.

I had never used cinnamon swirled bread before for French toast but my life is forever changed. Never going back to using plain bread again. Highly recommend this recipe!
