This Guinness beer bread comes together quickly, requires no yeast or kneading, and tastes amazing warm and slathered with butter. The Guinness gives it a subtle roasted barley flavor, and the top has a slightly chewy crunch that is so delicious.

I hate making bread, but this Guinness beer bread is a major exception. It's completely no-fuss and foolproof. There's no waiting for it to rise or kneading involved, and it will make your house smell like freshly baked bread in no time. It's great as toast or served warm, and it's perfect for St. Patrick's Day--with Kerrygold Irish butter, of course.

What is beer bread?
It's just what it sounds like--bread made with beer! The beer and baking soda help the bread rise, so no yeast is needed. It's chewy and delicious, and retains some of the flavor of whatever beer you choose to use. In this case, we use Guinness Extra Stout. It's made with roasted barley, so it has a dry flavor with notes of chocolate and coffee. The bread maintains some of that roasted barley flavor, so it's perfect with some salty butter and a cup of coffee.
Ingredient List
- Flour
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Guinness Extra Stout- We tried this bread with regular Guinness and with Guinness Extra Stout, and we prefer the flavor of the extra stout. It's a little more complex and pairs better with the bread flavors.
- Granulated sugar
Instructions
Step 1: Add flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt to a large mixing bowl and mix to combine.
Step 2: Add the Guinness and water to the flour mixture and mix until everything is combined. If your mixture is too dry to incorporate everything, you can slowly add more warm water until everything comes together.
Step 3: Pour the mixture into a greased loaf pan. It will appear dense and dry, and the top won't be smooth or pretty. Bake at 350°F for 1 hour, or until the top of the loaf is hard and slightly golden brown on the edges.
Step 4: Enjoy sliced and warm with butter or honey.

You can, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's best on its own with butter or honey or as toast because it's not a super sturdy bread. It's great with a cup of coffee.
