Why We Love These Chickpeas
Mollie and I love crunchy chickpeas. We throw them on our salads and eat them by the handful. We usually buy these Good Bean Crunchy Chickpeas from Sam's Club or Walmart, but we didn't have any last week, and I didn't want to run to the store.
To satisfy my chickpea craving, I tossed a can in the air fryer with some oil, and 30 minutes later...voilà—crunchy chickpeas! Now that we know how easy they are to make at home, we'll never buy them again. They're fast, easy, healthy, and super delicious.
Key Ingredients and Substitutions
Canned Chickpeas: Any brand works well. We usually just buy a store-brand can of chickpeas.
Oil: Use a neutral-tasting oil like avocado oil or vegetable oil. I wouldn't recommend olive oil or anything else with a distinct flavor (unless that's the flavor you're going for!).
Desired seasonings: Ranch seasoning, taco seasoning, sea salt, pepper, and Tajín are a few ideas, but the possibilities are endless! You can also leave them totally plain.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Drain and rinse a can of chickpeas and place them into the basket of your air fryer. Add oil and shake the basket to cover the chickpeas completely.
Step 2: Cook at 300°F for 30 minutes (or until crispy), removing the basket and shaking it every 5-10 minutes.
Step 3: Once the chickpeas are crispy, toss them with your desired seasonings while they're still hot. Allow them to cool, then transfer them to an air-tight container and enjoy them within 3 or 4 days.
Serving Ideas
One of the reasons we love these crunchy chickpeas is because they're so versatile. Here are some ways we love to eat them:
- On a salad: We love using these chickpeas as a crouton replacement. They're great on Caesar salads, Greek salads, cobb salads, or mixed garden salads. They'd be a great addition to our wedge salad recipe!
- In a wrap: Remember when everyone put chips on their sandwiches in elementary school? This is like the adult version of that. Throw these on a wrap for some extra crunch. They'd be great on our pesto turkey wrap or air fryer chicken wraps.
- On top of soup: These are great on top of soup for some crunch. I love them on tomato or roasted red pepper soup.
- By themselves: I have no problem shoving these into my mouth all by themselves. They're a great popcorn or chip substitute, especially when you add some seasonings.
Frequently asked questions
Store the chickpeas in an air-tight container for up to 4 days. Make sure they're not exposed to any moisture or they'll get soggy. After 4 days, they tend to get stale.
We cook our chickpeas at 300°F for about 30 minutes, but the timing may vary depending on your air fryer. Take the basket out and shake it every 5 minutes or so, and continue cooking until the chickpeas reach your desired crispness.
I don't recommend air frying your chickpeas with the seasoning already on them because a lot of seasonings have a tendency to burn. Adding it after they've cooked works best in our experience.
